LIGHTS OUT: THE END OF LATE NIGHT

 On May 21, 2026, at 11:53 pm in New York City, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert signed off the air for the last time.  After months of controversy over free speech, censorship, and corporate media, the cancellation of an institutional late-night series sparked debate over how much influence the government should have over what mainstream media is allowed to air and what it is not.  Given below is the chart for the moment the show ended and what the larger implications are for not only the late-night host and his staff, but also how we can expect Uranus in Gemini to affect communication and the larger society going forward.

As with everything in astrology, it is no coincidence that the final episode aired on the night of the Sun-Uranus conjunction in Gemini. Uranus first entered Gemini on July 7, 2025, briefly returned to Taurus during its retrograde cycle, and re-entered Gemini on April 25, 2026. It will remain primarily in Gemini until 2033, making this an important ingress that begins seven years of major changes in communication, information, and the ways people exchange ideas. As a Gemini Sun, Stephen Colbert used his show to provide the public with humorous commentary about the government. Many viewed the cancellation as an act of censorship, a topic that Uranus in Gemini will most likely revisit repeatedly during its transit through this sign. Many celebrities and journalists spoke out against the decision. The Sun-Uranus conjunction is likely forecasting a larger narrative that will unfold while Uranus transits Gemini. First Amendment rights will be central to discussions about America’s fundamental rights and freedoms going forward.

 Another aspect of the chart that stood out to me was the Moon in Leo opposite Pluto in Aquarius.  This shows just how badly Stephen Colbert and his staff needed to express themselves and really produce the kind of show that they always intended to create. They gave their all in the final episode and were very proud of the legacy they created.  However, I think the resistance to the establishment within them isn’t over.  Many of them will likely go on to speak out against those in power and possibly have tell-all books and interviews in the future. 

One especially touching feature of the chart is Venus and Jupiter in Cancer in the sixth house. This may symbolize the close, family-like bond among the crew, as well as the affection the audience continued to feel for them until the end. Since this is a chart for the show’s ending, I suspect that many of them will work together again on another show or continue collaborating on similar projects. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be remembered as one of the greatest late-night programs and may come to be seen as the beginning of a renewed movement in which Americans once again stood up for free speech.
