America’s Founding Horoscope: Faith, Freedom, Law, and Accountability

The chart of the United States can be read as more than the birth chart of a nation. It is a symbolic blueprint for a country founded on faith, freedom of belief, responsibility, law, citizenship, honor, and integrity. The July 4, 1776, 5:10 PM LMT chart for Philadelphia, later publicized by Ebenezer Sibley, reflects many of the ideals associated with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Masonic principles held by many of the Founding Fathers. The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are based on fundamental beliefs of Freemasons. Thirteen of the fourteen signatories to the Constitution were members of the fraternity of Freemasons. Freemason principles include:
“Faith must be the center of our lives. All men and women are the children of God. No one has the right to tell another person what he or she must think or believe. Each person has a responsibility to be a good citizen, obeying the law. It is important to work to make the world a better place for all, and Honor and integrity are keys to a meaningful life”

The USA chart has a strong western, or “other-oriented,” emphasis: This reflects the Masonic principles. In 1776, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto had not yet been discovered, so the chart was interpreted using the seven visible celestial bodies, which were placed in terrific locations to support and create a country that would thrive by following the golden rules elaborated below.
Faith as the center of our lives: The Masonic principles that “faith must be the center of our lives” and that “all men and women are the children of God” are reflected in the USA chart through Sagittarius rising and the Sun’s rulership of the 9th house of faith, philosophy, and higher law. The ascendant, ruler, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer in the 7th, describing the way we appear to the world through relationships, alliances, and moral purpose. The Sun, representing men, and Venus, representing women, are both out of bounds and surround Jupiter, the Great Benefic, symbolically placing humanity around the principles of divine protection, faith, and shared spiritual worth.
No one has the right to tell another person what he or she must think or believe: The idea that no one has the right to tell another person what to think or believe is echoed by the Moon in Aquarius in the 3rd house of speech and communication. This placement supports freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and the independent exchange of ideas.
Each person has a responsibility to be a good citizen, obeying the law: Both Sun and Venus in the 7th are joined with Jupiter, the rule of law. Also, Sun squares Saturn, which is exalted in Libra, the sign of law, and is the highest planet in the chart, placed in his own house.
It is important to work to make the world a better place for all: Saturn in Libra, placed in the 10th house of vocation and calling is exalted and rules the first, second and third house of self, personal values, skills and the local neighborhood. Venus, ruler of Saturn is joined with exalted Jupiter in the 7th house of other people.
Honor and integrity are keys to a meaningful life: Saturn exalted in Libra and placed in the 10th house. Jupiter angular and ruling the chart with Sagittarius righteousness and commitment to truth.
Challenges: In any mundane chart, one looks at the malefic planets, Mars and Saturn, and their placements to see the problem areas for a country.
Malefic Mars, out of bounds, is in the seventh house in Gemini, a mutable, indecisive, chatty, intellectual, curious, and sibling-oriented air sign. Our enemies talk about us, gossip about us, are easily divided and not particularly effective, preferring to talk rather than take action. Mars in the 7th house is weak by placement. Mercury, ruler of Mars, is retrograde, in non-communicative Cancer, making malefic Mars even weaker. Mars becomes security oriented with Mercury’s placement in the eighth house of money and assets of others. The natal placement suggests we can buy our enemies cooperation by supporting and taking care of them. Our enemies select actions based on their financial interests and are of two minds when dealing with us.
Saturn, the chart’s second malefic, is placed in Libra, the sign of its exaltation, and rides high in the USA chart, in the tenth house. Saturn says we, as a country, must conduct ourselves in an exalted and honorable manner or risk a profound fall from power. Saturn is the accountant, the keeper of karma, and deliverer of the results of our actions, and any deviation promptly delivers those results in a public, quite visible manner. Saturn rules the second house, so our financial security depends on acting in a responsible and honorable manner as citizens of the world.
A Beautiful but Demanding Chart: We have a lovely chart to support Thomas Jefferson’s observation – “Always commit an act as though the world were looking at you”. The western emphasis, angular and above the horizon chart suggests the whole world watches what goes on in our country. We have an exceptional public chart. We rapidly reap what we sow, good or bad. What goes around comes around, magnified by Venus, the Sun, and Jupiter.
