A Lunar Eclipse Conjunct Fomalhaut: Shifting the Tides of Belief

By Taylor Jackson

On the evening of August 27, 2026 (10:18PM MT / 12:18AM ET), a partial lunar eclipse will take place at 4° Pisces conjunct the royal fixed star Fomalhaut. Lunations involving Fomalhaut mark ideological shifts, whether they serve as pivot points in the midst of gradual change or as sudden, intense, belief-based actions and events.

Fomalhaut is one of the four royal fixed stars of Persia. It was known as the Watcher in the South and marked the winter solstice for Persian astrologers in approximately 3,000 B.C.E. Ptolemy considered the star to be of the nature of Venus & Mercury, and considered it a powerful star with the capability to “cause malevolence of sublime scope and character, and change from a material to a spiritual form of expression.”  Transits involving Fomalhaut may manifest as powerful destructive tendencies or impactful actions based on strong ideologies. Alternatively, these transits can inspire people and institutions to move their focus from materialism to spirituality in pursuit of a higher purpose.

To understand the effects of Fomalhaut and interpret this upcoming eclipse, we can examine three strands of historical associations: eclipses conjunct Fomalhaut, eclipses in the same saros cycle, and the two previous Pisces eclipses in this recent 2024-2026 series. For this analysis, I am considering events within three weeks of an eclipse as relevant.

Previous Eclipses Conjunct Fomalhaut:

The August 27, 1969 lunar eclipse at 4° Pisces aligned with the Woodstock Festival, which took place August 15th-18th. This festival was a pinnacle of expression for the hippie movement and its counterculture ideologies of radical peace, universal love, and nonviolence. Additionally, the infamous Manson cult murders were committed August 8th and 9th of that year. These killings were a violent expression of Charles Manson’s Helter Skelter race war prophecies and apocalyptic ideology.

The August 27, 1988 lunar eclipse at 4° Pisces took place shortly after the founding of Al-Qaeda, the radical Islamist organization most widely known for conducting the September 11th attacks. Al-Qaeda was officially formed when Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Dr. Fadl, three prominent Islamist ideological leaders, met together in Peshawar, Pakistan on August 11th.

Though radically different, Woodstock, the Manson murders, and the founding of Al-Qaeda each reflected a powerful vision of an alternate world. Together, they reveal Fomalhaut’s spectrum: belief can inspire peace and unity or, when distorted by fanaticism, lead to violence and destruction.

Eclipses in Saros Cycle 138:

The upcoming eclipse is part of Saros cycle 138, and three eclipses in this cycle stand out for their correlation with major ideological events. The July 16, 1954 lunar eclipse at 22° Capricorn took place just one day before construction commenced on the original Disneyland theme park, “The Happiest Place on Earth” and a global icon of dreams and imagination.

The July 26, 1972 lunar eclipse at 3° Aquarius took place only two days after the Tuskegee, Alabama Syphilis Experiment was exposed by Washington Star Newspaper on July 24th. The story revealed the U.S. Public Health Service’s horrific medical experiments on African-American men, where the government agency deliberately withheld existing Syphilis medical care to observe the effects of the disease when left untreated. The revelation was met with intense public outcry, and the United States public health system has yet to recover from this breach of trust.

The August 16, 2008 lunar eclipse at 24° Aquarius took place shortly before President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party nomination on August 27, 2008. This was the first time an African-American person held the presidential nomination of a major American political party. His campaign featured posters emblazoned with the word “HOPE”, a true embodiment of Fomalhaut-esque ideals.

Pisces Eclipses in the Current Series:

This upcoming eclipse is the last in Pisces in this series, and we need only reflect on the events of recent Pisces eclipses to understand how this lunation may transform our personal and collective beliefs. The September 17, 2024 eclipse at 26° Pisces coincided with the Harris vs Trump presidential debate (September 10th), as well as an assassination attempt on President Trump (September 15th). The September 7, 2025 eclipse at 15° Pisces coincided with the International Association of Genocide Scholars declaring a genocide in Gaza (September 1st), the publication of the infamous Epstein Birthday Book and its letter from President Trump (September 8th), and the ideologically charged assassination of Charlie Kirk (September 10th).

This August 27, 2026 eclipse squares Uranus in Gemini and opposes Mercury in Virgo within one degree, while Mars in Cancer and Jupiter in Leo both apply to aspects with Saturn in Aries. This eclipse may coincide with dramatic, aggressive, ideology-based announcements or events. It has the potential to reveal shocking information that drastically alters our collective belief in systems or individuals. Where we place our trust, faith, and belief is always in question, and eclipses involving Fomalhault bring this question to the forefront with surprising magnitude.
